Focus on 4G competition: China Telecom's 4G planning exposure has invested over 100 billion

Yesterday, as China Telecom opened 4G in 16 cities, the 4G competition of the three major operators entered a new round of competition. In the face of the technical shortcomings of the evolution of the system, how the future of China Telecom's 4G will become a topic of focus in the industry.

It is learned from China Telecom that China Telecom will continue to provide customers with products and services including broadband Internet access, 4G, information applications and fixed telephones, focusing on the development strategy of integrated information service providers, and strive to build a five-year time. "New China Telecom."

In terms of 4G, the latest data held by Tencent Technology shows that in 2013, China Telecom's 4G construction has invested a total of 13.2 billion yuan. The investment this year is expected to exceed 40 billion yuan. In the next two to three years, it will continue to invest in a higher scale. The total investment will exceed 100 billion yuan.

Work focus in the second half of the year: to achieve 4G depth coverage

Since yesterday, China Telecom has officially issued 177 of the first 16 cities in China (Nanjing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Jinan, Hefei, Shijiazhuang, Haikou, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Nanchang, Nanning, Lanzhou). The beginning of the 4G new segment and the 4G package, which is also the first operator to launch the new 4G segment, which also marks the official start of the 4G hybrid networking test.

It is understood that China Telecom's opening of Tianyi 4G mobile phone business in some cities will be divided into two steps:

The first step, starting from July 15th, users can apply for Tianyi 4G mobile phone business in China Telecom's network hall and Jingdong Mall. After selecting the package and mobile phone, they can be used.

The second step, starting from July 22, in the above 16 cities, China Telecom's business halls open Tianyi 4G mobile phone business, users can go to the local business hall.

Old customers of China Telecom in the above cities can purchase new 4G mobile phones and 4G mobile phone cards without changing their numbers, use 4G services, or upgrade their more favorable 4G packages without changing their mobile phones.

Tencent Technology has visited some cities in the field, and China Telecom, which has been waiting for more than half a year for the FDD-LTE trial network, has prepared for network coverage. The first batch of cities that opened 4G services such as Nanjing and Shanghai covered more than 95% of the breadth, even if it is difficult. The indoor coverage is also over 90%.

It is reported that as early as 2010, China Telecom established a team of experts to carry out research on 4G network standards and technical specifications, and conducted relevant technical tests in the laboratory, completing technical reserves and experience accumulation. Subsequently, China Telecom carried out small-scale field tests in Hangzhou and Nanjing, conducted network technology verification, and improved relevant technical specifications and standards. In 2013, the TD-LTE scale network test was launched. Especially after the 4G license was issued in the country at the end of the year, China Telecom launched the 4G network scale construction and expanded the network planning to key cities such as the provincial capital. The accumulated investment in the year was about 13.2 billion yuan.

In China's urban area, China Telecom's 4G network speed is measured. The average outdoor speed is about 40Mbps. Although there is a gap between the theoretical rate of 100Mbps, the rate of China Mobile's TD-LTE is similar to that of the same place.

In addition, the average indoor speed reached 30Mbps, but the signal was not stable during the actual measurement. In this regard, the relevant person in charge of China Telecom admits to Tencent Technology: "We are working hard to achieve dense urban areas, general urban areas (including county towns), urban suburbs (including development zones), traffic routes, 4A and above tourist attractions. Good coverage of key townships and other areas, and other areas are constantly improving. In view of the complex indoor environment of urban buildings, we are stepping up the construction of indoor distribution systems for major buildings."

Tencent Technology has learned that due to the characteristics of wireless communication technology, the number of 4G terminals in the network, the distance between the 4G terminal and the base station, and the electromagnetic interference of the surrounding environment will affect the 4G network speed actually experienced by the user.

The internal depth coverage of commercial buildings, subways, airports and other public areas is still difficult to achieve a satisfactory level of satisfaction. In particular, some buildings and communities are difficult to enter, making it difficult for operators to implement deep coverage.

In addition, some people are worried about the base station radiation, and often do not want operators to build base stations nearby. In fact, the construction of mobile base stations of operators must be carried out in strict accordance with relevant national standards, in line with the requirements of health and environmental protection.

At present, the coverage rate of 4G network in the public area of Nanjing main city is over 98%, and the coverage rate of Tianyi 4G network in suburban combined areas is over 95%. The coverage of 4G network in Nanjing's former county area and major township Tianyi exceeds 90%, and the construction of local 4G base stations has exceeded 2000.

According to China Telecom's network deployment plan, the current hybrid network trial network has basically achieved coverage of 16 urban areas, and will further strengthen the supplementary construction of urban deep coverage. In the next phase, the deep coverage of the relevant county towns and key areas will continue to be improved, and the total number of specific base station constructions is not mentioned.

According to officially confirmed data, China Telecom has deployed 4G trial networks in more than 60 cities in terms of network coverage, and it is expected to cover more than 300 cities during the year. It is worth mentioning that in the case of hybrid networking, more than 80% of China Telecom's 4G network construction investment can support two different standard 4G technologies.

Introducing a new generation of iPhone during the year

In terms of the tariffs concerned by users, as early as June 27, after obtaining the 4G hybrid network test approval, China Telecom officially released the mobile 4G package at the Nanjing Tianyi Terminal Trade Fair, with low threshold, large traffic, shareable and optional. It is the biggest feature of China Telecom's mobile phone 4G package.

Specifically for younger users, there are pure traffic cloud cards; for business people, there are 4G packages for users; for those who have personalized needs, they also launched a personalized custom package; in addition, for government and enterprise users also launched a government and enterprise Group purchase package.

According to reports, Tianyi 4G main package tariffs from 59 yuan to 599 yuan, compared with 3G package traffic up to 2 times, the same business usage costs up to 65%. Flying Young pure flow cloud card 49 yuan package contains 2GB of provincial traffic, not only the lowest threshold, 2 cents 1 MB unit price has refreshed the new low traffic price, eliminating the consumer's 4G traffic "run fast, use fees, Worried about being too expensive.

Compared with the other two 4G tariffs, some of China Telecom's packages are still relatively cheap. For example, China Telecom's 99 yuan file enjoys 4G packages, which is 200MB more than the 106 yuan file Unicom Wo 4G package. The same consumption of 1G traffic and 500 minutes, with Tianyi 4G package only 129 yuan, while China Mobile flight package is 138 yuan.

However, if you choose the package comparison of other stalls, the advantages are not obvious, so in general, the three operators are comparable.

For the current China Telecom, the lack of 4G terminals is a problem. After the licensing last year, it has been mainly based on 4G network cards. Currently, there are only 6 4G terminals that have been listed, namely Cool S6, K1 and 5892, Huawei P7, C8817L and ZTE Q801L.

According to the planning of China Telecom's terminal, it is expected that there will be more than 70 Tianyi 4G terminals listed before the end of the year. Insiders told Tencent that the terminals listed in the second half of the year will cover large foreign brands, including the latest iPhone 6.

Can China Telecom restore its momentum?

Prior to this, China Telecom had lost 4.36 million users in the past five months because it did not get the required FDD trial network approval to launch the scale. After this approval, can China Telecom turn the tide?

Compared with China Unicom, China Telecom's eagerness for the approval of the FDD trial network is even stronger. Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Telecom, responded by saying: "This spring is coming late, but it will still bloom in the spring." The implication is that although FDD is late, China Telecom will continue to develop. Therefore, it took only half a month to obtain China Telecom from the approval of the first batch of 16 cities. It can be seen that the preparations for the previous period have already begun.

Some industry analysts pointed out that China Telecom's 4G base station coverage is still very small, and the supported 4G mobile phone terminals are relatively lacking. For operators, coverage, tariffs, terminals and user experience are the four factors that make their development successful.

Regardless of the tariff, there are still many problems that China Telecom needs to solve in terms of coverage, terminal and user experience. In particular, the network coverage is still unstable, and secondly, the introduction of well-known mobile phone brands and hot-selling products is accelerated. The introduction of Apple iPhone 6 will play a certain role in promoting the future.

Conclusion

From the perspective of the industry, the rise of China Telecom and China Unicom in the 3G era has broken China Mobile's long-standing dominance in the telecommunications field and made the industry's competition more balanced. However, the release of the TD-LTE license in the early 4G made the balance established. The collapse of the network test will once again bring the industry back to balance.
