It is rumored that this helicopter, which resembles a drone, could soon become a new form of urban transportation. As the drone market continues to grow rapidly, Workhorse recently announced that it will conduct the first public flight test of its SureFly manned rotorcraft at the 2018 CES Consumer Electronics Show. The SureFly can carry two passengers, has a maximum range of 70 miles, and comes with a hefty price tag of $200,000.
Based in Ohio, Workhorse has revealed that the latest version of the SureFly will make its public debut at the CES event in Las Vegas on January 8 next year. A photo of the hybrid aircraft is expected to be showcased during the event, highlighting its innovative design and potential for future mobility solutions.
"CES is the perfect platform to introduce SureFly," said a Workhorse spokesperson. "As one of the most significant technology events globally, SureFly demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can revolutionize the vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft industry."
Earlier this year, the futuristic carbon fiber SureFly made its debut at the Paris Air Show. It is equipped with eight independent rotor systems, a hybrid powertrain, and can carry up to 400 pounds. The aircraft uses both gasoline and battery power, offering a versatile and efficient solution for short-range travel.
The initial model of the SureFly will allow for manned flight tests but won’t include full autonomous cruise capabilities. However, it can fly continuously for 112 kilometers at a top speed of 112 km/h. One of its unique features is the foldable rotor blades, making it easy to store in a regular garage.
Dektas, a representative from Workhorse, stated that the SureFly redefines what people typically imagine when they think of a helicopter. The vehicle can be operated like a drone, making it simple and intuitive to use.
According to Deltas, the eight-rotor aircraft is not designed for individual consumers alone but is better suited for applications such as agriculture, emergency response, urban commuting, military operations, and cargo transport.
Workhorse has previously introduced a range of electric and hybrid vehicles, including drones, pickups, and trucks. The company’s goal is to develop aircraft that are safer, more stable, and environmentally friendly.
Although the early versions of the SureFly require manual operation, the company aims to eventually achieve full autonomy while carrying up to 180 kilograms of cargo. They believe the aircraft could find its first real-world applications in sectors like agriculture, rescue missions, and urban transportation.
Workhorse CEO Stephen Burns expressed his excitement about the project: “For 78 years, helicopters have remained largely unchanged. Now, we’re finally reinventing them. Introducing SureFly on the global stage is a milestone for the aviation industry.â€
Burns added, “We’ve designed the aircraft to eliminate single points of failure. If the engine fails, the backup battery can keep it airborne for five minutes, giving you time to land safely. Even if two or three of the eight rotors fail, such as from a bird strike, the aircraft can still land safely. That’s exactly what ‘SureFly’ means—being able to stop mid-air.â€
From a personal perspective, the ideal user for the average consumer would be someone who wants to commute to work quickly and efficiently using this flying taxi. Although the retail price is expected to reach $200,000 by 2019, it's a concept that is now becoming tangible and within reach.
