In addition to Pokémon Go, what can augmented reality bring to us?

You may have seen them walking around your home; maybe they have seen them in local shopping malls – it is estimated that the daily active users of Pokémon Go installed on smartphones reach 20 million These players seem to be everywhere, and tirelessly strive to "take them all."

But the most striking thing about this game is how it brings augmented reality (AR) to mainstream applications. Virtual Reality (VR) completely encloses users in a unique, immersive, computer-generated experience. AR is different, it allows users to provide transparent information content to users while in a real environment.

Pokémon Go

After installing Pokémon Go, smartphones with high-resolution screens and cameras proved to be the best device for delivering AR to a wide range of users. But the application of AR in the game field may not be the first time consumers have the opportunity to experience this technology. For example, many furniture retailers and home improvement centers offer AR smartphone apps that allow you to see the effect of placing a new sofa or painting in your room before you buy.

Pokémon Go has been successful, but due to the inherent technical specifications of today's smartphones, it is still a very limited AR application. Although the AR image on the smartphone screen is very impressive, it still does not have the full potential of this technology.

It’s time to improve the AR experience.

The full potential of releasing AR requires a new hardware solution (also known as a head mounted display or near-eye display) such as a wearable display.

An advanced wearable display will provide a more convincing AR experience, as virtual images will "emerge" in the user's field of view, rather than just being displayed on the phone screen. In Pokémon Go, these virtual images are pictures of the various creatures you can collect and fight with.

As with any technology solution, developers and product engineers face some tough design decisions when developing display screens for AR applications.

Wearable displays should be light enough that they are light enough when the user wears them and even forget that they are wearing them. The Vuzix M3000 smart glasses are a good example (see below). At the same time, they need high resolution, sufficient contrast, and a large field of view (FOV) to maximize the credibility of virtual content. The second consideration is to handle power consumption and battery life.

Create a brighter future for AR

At TI, the team that worked with me has created a number of great solutions that help developers create next-generation wearable displays that include low power, high brightness and contrast, excellent image quality, and fast Refresh rate and low latency DLP® technology.

Of course, it's not easy to balance these technical requirements and bring the first wearable AR display products to the mainstream market. However, other wearable devices for VR and immersion displays have emerged, such as the Avegant Glyph display.

Thanks to the great success of Pokémon Go - more than 100 million downloads and growing - the development of such technologies seems more meaningful than ever - and more likely to succeed.
