**How GPRS DTU Works**

Unlike the DTU, which is typically a simple device, the server runs more complex applications, capable of handling multiple connections and maintaining real-time data collection, database services, and other advanced features.
Before establishing a connection, the GPRS DTU must know the server's IP address and port number. Once connected, both ends function similarly, exchanging data seamlessly. The server’s IP can be a public static IP or a dynamic domain name resolved via a DNS server. Port numbers are associated with specific services on the server, such as TCP port 80 for HTTP or port 21 for FTP.
To maintain a stable connection, especially when using a GPRS network, the DTU often sends periodic "heartbeat" packets. This helps keep the NAT (Network Address Translation) mapping active, preventing the connection from being dropped due to inactivity. This is particularly important in mobile networks where connections may be terminated after periods of no activity.

**3. Automatic Heartbeat and Persistent Online Function**
One of the main advantages of GPRS is the ability to stay permanently online. GPRS DTUs are designed to maintain this connection using automatic dialing, heartbeat packets, and reconnection features. These help prevent disconnections caused by inactivity or network timeouts.
**4. Parameter Configuration and Permanent Storage**
Since GPRS DTUs are used in various applications, their configurations—such as server IP, port, and serial baud rate—can vary. To accommodate this, the device allows users to configure and save settings in internal non-volatile memory (like FLASH or EEPROM). Upon power-up, it automatically resumes operation with the stored parameters.
