Another big move is coming! OSRAM acquires Digital Lumens to strengthen the future of industrial IoT

In August 2017, Shanghai — Osram announced its decision to acquire Digital Lumens, a prominent U.S.-based software platform provider, with the aim of bolstering its IoT offerings through connected lighting systems tailored for industrial buildings. This strategic move underscores Osram's commitment to expanding its digital footprint in the rapidly evolving world of smart technology.

**A Leading Software Powerhouse** Digital Lumens, established in 2008, specializes in industrial IoT solutions. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, it employs 65 people and reported sales in the tens of millions last fiscal year. Their software platform supports diverse applications such as intelligent lighting controls, energy consumption tracking, security systems, and environmental metrics like air quality. Operating on a cloud-based infrastructure, the platform seamlessly integrates with components and hardware from other manufacturers. Digital Lumens boasts an impressive customer base, having installed over 2,500 IoT solutions across industries. "The acquisition of Digital Lumens will allow OSRAM to offer forward-thinking digital solutions for managing devices and IoT applications," said Stefan Kampmann, CTO of Osram. "By merging software and sensors on one platform, businesses can gain deeper insights into their physical environments and optimize space utilization. With our profound knowledge of spaces, Osram is moving beyond traditional lighting into pioneering new business models. Moreover, this platform is compatible with lighting products from other manufacturers."

**Paving the Way for Innovation** Osram intends to absorb Digital Lumens' existing digital services into its own framework, such as Einstone, which offers navigation and positioning solutions via Bluetooth. For instance, in a retail setting, Einstone can send personalized product promotions directly to customers' phones. During a pilot initiative, this approach led to substantial sales increases and earned recognition as the top in-store solution at Euroshop 2017. Post-acquisition, Osram aims to solidify its role as a leading provider of platform-driven industrial IoT applications while fostering partnerships to create tailored solutions for optimizing building operations. Digital Lumens' President and CEO, Tom Pincince, expressed excitement about collaborating with Osram’s technical experts to drive further expansion and introduce novel customer applications. He highlighted how both current and prospective clients could anticipate enhanced value-added innovations in the future. As part of its ongoing evolution, Osram envisions itself not just as a lighting provider but as a comprehensive partner offering end-to-end IoT solutions. This shift reflects broader trends in smart city development where connectivity and intelligence converge to redefine urban living and commercial practices.

Looking ahead, Osram remains steadfast in its mission to lead the charge in transforming how people interact with their surroundings through advanced lighting technologies. By leveraging Digital Lumens' expertise alongside its own innovations, Osram sets itself apart as a pioneer in the IoT landscape, poised to deliver impactful technological advancements that shape tomorrow’s cities today.
