Starting with Azure, Microsoft opens 10,000 patent pools to users.

Microsoft has announced the implementation of its Azure Intellectual Property (IP) Protection Program in China, offering unlimited indemnification and open access to a large number of patents. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of IP-related disputes for enterprises and developers using Azure services. By providing open access to its patent portfolio, Microsoft is helping users avoid potential legal issues that may arise from the use of cloud-based technologies. Under this program, Microsoft commits to covering all claims of IP infringement that result from the use of Azure products—including open-source components. If an Azure user faces litigation due to the use of Azure Cloud Services, they will be entitled to unlimited compensation. This move not only strengthens trust among users but also promotes a safer and more secure environment for cloud adoption. A key part of the program is the opening of 10,000 "patent pools" to compliant Azure users. These pools are part of Microsoft’s broader patent library and include innovations developed by its world-class engineers over the years. The initiative covers a wide range of technologies, including open-source platforms like Hadoop used in Azure HDInsight. In case of patent litigation, users can seek protection through Microsoft's patent transfers, ensuring their rights are safeguarded. The intellectual property included in the patent pool spans various cutting-edge fields, such as smartphones and the Internet of Things (IoT). While the program appears to be a protective measure for partners, developers, and users, it also plays a crucial role in Microsoft’s business strategy in China. By reducing IP-related disputes, the company is supporting enterprise digital transformation and enhancing Azure’s market presence in the region. In addition to the IP protection plan, Microsoft and 21Vianet also announced new features and service upgrades for Azure, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data analytics, and cloud development. These updates aim to enhance user experience and technical capabilities across multiple domains. Microsoft has also partnered with Facebook to introduce the Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) format, which improves the versatility of AI development tools. According to Jason Zander, Microsoft’s general manager for Azure, the collaboration extends beyond Facebook, involving many other partners. The goal is to bring together top AI experts to leverage Azure for training machine learning models and developing practical AI applications. Azure’s cognitive services have been available in China for some time, with APIs for face recognition, emotion detection, and computer vision already launched. Microsoft continues to evaluate which additional APIs will be most relevant to Chinese developers, based on feedback and demand. Despite launching five years after AWS, Azure has quickly grown to become the second-largest cloud provider. Jason Zander attributes this success to Microsoft’s long-standing focus on enterprise customers. Many businesses already using Office 365 find it easy to adopt Azure, creating a natural ecosystem for cloud growth. Unlike AWS, which focuses heavily on infrastructure services, Microsoft invests in high-level applications, platform services, IoT, and media streaming. This strategic approach, combined with strong technology and service advantages, has driven Azure’s rapid adoption. At the Build 2017 conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of integrating IoT with cloud intelligence as part of the company’s digital transformation strategy. With over 20 years of experience in embedded systems, Microsoft is leveraging its expertise to expand into the IoT market. Azure IoT Suite offers integrated solutions for managing devices, analyzing data, and generating insights through tools like machine learning, stream analytics, and Power BI. Multinational companies like Vision Energy have shown confidence in Azure IoT, and these benefits are expected to reach the Chinese market soon.
