During a recent test drive of the Brilliance BMW X1, I was struck by its modern styling and premium feel. Even at first glance, it’s hard not to notice the iconic "double kidney" grille, which has been enlarged to reflect the car's robust power.
The X1’s angular headlights and sleek profile give it a youthful yet sophisticated appeal. Beneath its elegant exterior lies a practical interior with ample space. The black and brown leather upholstery, complemented by silver accents, exudes a sense of elegance and comfort. The multifunctional leather steering wheel, equipped with controls for the audio system and phone, enhances convenience. The instrument cluster features a minimalist design, with a head-up display that projects important driving information directly onto the windshield, ensuring safety and ease of use.
Under the hood, the X1 offers a choice of 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. My test model, the xDrive20Li, boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine delivering 192 horsepower. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the car accelerates smoothly and effortlessly, providing a comfortable driving experience. The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures stability and traction, whether navigating city streets or winding country roads.
Despite its compact size, the X1 surprises with its spacious interior. Rear legroom is generous, and the rear seats fold flat, expanding cargo capacity from 420 liters to a whopping 1,350 liters. Additional features like a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and a premium sound system further enhance the driving experience.
**BMW X3:**
The 2018 BMW X3 marks a significant evolution of the popular midsize SUV. With a longer wheelbase and updated styling, the new X3 feels more refined and athletic than ever. Standard all-wheel drive (xDrive) is a welcome addition, offering improved handling and stability. The lineup includes two engines: the xDrive30i powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the M40i, featuring a potent 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder unit.
Inside, the X3 boasts a driver-focused cockpit with a sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel and a digital gauge cluster. The standard panoramic sunroof and adaptive suspension contribute to its premium feel. Optional upgrades like gesture control and Apple CarPlay integration highlight BMW’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.
**BMW X5 xDrive40e:**
The BMW X5 xDrive40e represents the brand’s foray into hybrid luxury SUVs. While it shares much of its exterior design with the conventional X5, subtle cues like the "eDrive" badge and unique rear exhaust tips differentiate it. The interior, however, remains largely unchanged, with a traditional BMW layout and a mix of black and brown tones. Despite its advanced hybrid powertrain, the dashboard lacks a futuristic aesthetic.
The X5 xDrive40e pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 313 horsepower. Pure electric range is limited to 30 km, but the car's overall cruising range tops 800 km. Driving modes like AUTO eDRIVE, MAX eDRIVE, and SAVE allow flexibility depending on your needs. Overall, while the X5 xDrive40e offers a glimpse of BMW’s future, its price premium over the standard X5 might leave some buyers questioning its value proposition.
