ForewordAs of today, 2017, the major e-commerce events in the Internet world focus on two key dates: the mid-year promotion of JD 618 and the Tmall Double 11 Carnival at the end of the year. For manufacturers, these promotions are essential opportunities to offer prices that meet customer expectations. Personally, I believe there are three main reasons:
- Double 11 is closer to the end of the year, which brings pressure to clear inventory and achieve annual sales targets. Manufacturers can't afford not to provide competitive pricing.
- Tmall has a policy called "Tmall Double 11 Price Control," which requires product prices during the Double 11 period to be lower than regular prices throughout the year. This regulation ensures that even if a manufacturer wants to reduce prices after Double 11, it won't be possible.
- Meeting sales goals during Double 11 can boost brand reputation and visibility. Why not take advantage of this opportunity? Especially for smartphones, it's a powerful way to gain attention.
2017 marked the first year of widespread adoption of Android phones featuring full-screen displays, wireless charging, and dual cameras. These technological advancements have significantly enhanced the daily phone experience. If you're planning to buy a new phone soon, grabbing a good deal during Double 11 is definitely a smart move. Based on my research, I'd like to share some insights with you.
Before diving into recommendations, I want to mention my first-generation God Machine—it’s a personal favorite, though I won’t go into why just yet.
What to Buy During Double 11: Mobile Phones with Value
When deciding what to recommend, I hesitated between categorizing by price range or brand. Ultimately, I chose to focus on brands, as it provides clearer guidance.
1. Samsung: Long and Curved
Samsung's early curved screen models were groundbreaking. However, the Galaxy Note 7 faced issues due to battery design flaws. To regain market trust, Samsung launched the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note 8, emphasizing high-value designs with large screen ratios. Both models have performed well without any major incidents, maintaining their position in the premium Android market.
The Galaxy S8/S8+ received excellent reviews since its May release. It features a futuristic ultra-high screen ratio, replacing physical buttons with on-screen navigation. The 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display offers a 2:1 aspect ratio with a resolution of 2960×1440. It is powered by either Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895, making it one of the top-performing devices available.
Currently, the wireless charging kit is priced at around 5288 yuan during the Double 11 sale, making it a strong alternative to the iPhone 8.
Another option is the Galaxy Note 8. While similar in performance to the S8, it has a larger screen and includes the exclusive S Pen, making it ideal for office users. Although it recently launched, it may see more attractive prices during Double 11.
2. Sony Xperia XZ Premium – A New Generation Flagship
Released in 2017, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium features a unique "one design" look, comes with a high-end Snapdragon 835 chip, and has a 5.5-inch 4K HDR display. It supports IP68 waterproofing, 960fps slow-motion video, and 4K recording. Originally priced at 5699 yuan, it recently dropped to 4399 yuan but sold out quickly. Keep an eye on it during Double 11.
3. Sharp – The Full-Screen Originator
Sharp's Aquos Crystal is considered the pioneer of full-screen phones. In 2017, they released the AQUOS S2, featuring their own FFD special-shaped screen. It offers a unique design and decent specs. Launched in August at 2488 yuan, it recently dropped to 1799 yuan, which might be the lowest price of the year for niche full-screen phones.
Double 11: What to Buy – Domestic Brands
1. Xiaomi: Big Moves
Xiaomi has always been known for bold strategies, from the performance-focused Xiaomi 1 to the full-screen Xiaomi Mix. This year, there are several models worth considering.
1. Xiaomi 6 – Performance Monster
Launched in April, the Xiaomi 6 features a Snapdragon 835 chip, Adreno 540 GPU, and 6GB RAM. It has a dual-glass design with a metal frame, and a dual-camera setup. After six months on the market, it remains a top choice in the 2000-3000 yuan range. The 128GB version is currently priced at 2699 yuan, making it a better value than the 64GB model.
2. Xiaomi Mix 2 – Full-Screen Innovation
Following the original Xiaomi Mix, the Mix 2 features an 18:9 screen ratio, offering a more rounded and natural design. It also features top-tier specs. Recently, the 256GB version was priced at 3199 yuan, and I expect it to drop further during Double 11.
3. Red Rice Note 4X – Affordable and Practical
Featuring a Snapdragon 625 processor, the Red Rice Note 4X is budget-friendly. The 3GB version is priced at 899 yuan, while the 4GB version is 1099 yuan. Ideal as a backup phone or for older users who don’t need high performance.
2. Huawei – High-End Overseas Choices
1. Huawei Mate 10 – Flagship for Business Users
The Huawei Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch 2K screen, front fingerprint sensor, and the Kirin 970 SoC with NPU support. It also runs Android 8.0 and includes a PC mode via cable. Recently, it’s expected to see a price drop during Double 11.
2. Huawei Mate 9 – Cost-Effective Option
The Mate 9 has seen significant price reductions and is equipped with the Kirin 960 chip. Currently priced at 2789 yuan, it’s a solid choice for those seeking reliable performance without breaking the bank.
3. Nut Pro – Unique Design
The Nut Pro is a 1000-yuan phone with fast charging (18W), reverse charging, and Smartisan OS features like SMS management and image search. Recently, it was priced at 1299 yuan, but it’s already out of stock. Keep an eye on Double 11 for potential deals.
3. Vivo & Oppo – “Blue Green†Brands
While some may question the value of Vivo and Oppo, their user experiences are impressive. Features like VOOC fast charging, advanced camera software, and HiFi chips make them stand out. The Vivo X20 and Oppo R11s are strong options, especially during Double 11 when prices often drop.
4. Meizu – Solving Patent Issues with Qualcomm
1. Meizu Pro 7 – Year’s Small Flagship
The Meizu Pro 7 uses a dual-camera system and a secondary display, along with a HiFi chip and 4GB + 64GB configuration. It’s now priced at 2099 yuan, down from 2880 yuan. Expect further drops during Double 11.
2. Meizu Note 6 – Charm Blue True Flag
The Meizu Note 6 is the first to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chip. While not a flagship, it’s a practical choice for everyday use. It’s expected to see a price drop during Double 11.
Conclusion
This list covers only a fraction of the mobile phones worth buying during Double 11. Others like the Qihoo 360 N5S and Nubia Z17S also offer great value. If you have other recommendations, feel free to share them in the comments below. Let’s discuss and find the best deals together!
