ForewordAs of 2017, the Internet e-commerce giants have focused on two major promotional events: the mid-year promotion of JD 618 and the Tmall Double 11 Carnival at the end of the year. For manufacturers, these are crucial times to offer customers competitive prices. From my perspective, there are several key reasons:
1. Double 11 comes close to the end of the year, and there's pressure to clear inventory and meet annual sales targets. Manufacturers can't afford not to offer attractive deals.
2. To boost sales during Double 11, Tmall has introduced the “Tmall Double 11 Price Control†policy. This means that during the Double 11 period, the manufacturer’s price must be lower than the rest of the year. With this rule, even if a manufacturer wants to reduce the price after Double 11, it won’t be allowed.
3. Achieving high sales during Double 11 also serves as a proof of strength. Fame and profit are always worth pursuing. Especially for smartphones, this is a significant opportunity.
2017 marked the first year of Android phones with full-screen designs, wireless charging, and dual cameras becoming standard. These technological advancements brought new experiences to daily phone use. If you're planning to buy a new phone soon, grabbing a good deal during Double 11 is definitely a smart move. Based on my research and experience, I’ve compiled some recommendations for you.
Before I start, I want to mention my first-generation phone, the God Machine. Don’t ask why I like it—it just feels right.
I was originally hesitant about how to structure this guide—should I categorize by price range or by brand? In the end, I decided to focus on brands since it might be more helpful. Here are my top picks for value-driven mobile phones during the Double 11 period.
**1. Samsung – Long and Curved Design**I still remember when Samsung first introduced the curved screen, it was a real eye-opener. However, the Galaxy Note 7 had issues with its battery design, causing global incidents. To regain market confidence and prevent domestic brands from taking over, Samsung launched the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 this year. These flagship models emphasize high-value, high-screen ratio designs. Since then, neither of the two models has experienced any major problems. Instead, they continue to dominate the high-end Android market.
My first recommendation is the Galaxy S8/S8+. Since its release in May, it received widespread praise for its appearance, performance, and user experience. The design uses a futuristic ultra-high screen ratio, replacing physical buttons with three native Android buttons. Although the fingerprint sensor is on the side of the main camera, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience. The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch screen with a near 2:1 aspect ratio and Super AMOLED display. It's powered by either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 8895, which are among the best chips available.
Currently, the wireless charging kit can be purchased for at least 5288 yuan during the Double 11 period, making it a strong alternative to the iPhone 8.
In addition to the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy Note 8 is another excellent choice. While similar in performance to the S8, the Note 8 has a larger screen and includes the exclusive "S Pen" feature, making it ideal for office users. The square design adds a professional touch.
Although the Note 8 was just released, it has already seen its first drop. I believe the Double 11 period will bring even better deals. The Galaxy S8, which has been on the market for six months, is likely to see a more substantial discount. If you're looking to buy, don’t miss this opportunity.
**2. Sony Xperia XZ Premium – A New Generation Flagship**The Sony Xperia XZ Premium, released in 2017, features a sleek one-piece design and is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 835 chip. It has a 5.5-inch 4K HDR display, supports IP68 waterproofing, and offers 960fps slow-motion video and 4K recording.
Originally priced at 5699 yuan, it recently dropped to 4399 yuan but sold out quickly. Keep an eye out for better deals during the Double 11 period.
**3. Sharp – The Full-Screen Originator**Sharp’s Aquos Crystal is widely recognized as the pioneer of the full-screen design. In 2017, Sharp launched the AQUOS S2, featuring its own FFD special-shaped screen. The design is unique, and the configuration is solid.
Launched in August, the AQUOS S2 was priced at 2488 yuan. The current monitored price is 1799 yuan, which I believe is the lowest price for the year. If you’re into niche full-screen phones, this is a great deal.
**Double 11 What to Buy: Domestic Brands** **1. Xiaomi – Big Moves**Xiaomi has always been known for its bold moves. From the performance fever of the Xiaomi 1 to the launch of the first full-screen phone, the Xiaomi Mix, the company has continuously challenged the market. This year, there are several Xiaomi phones worth considering.
**1. Xiaomi Mi 6 – Performance Monster**Launched in April, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is equipped with the Snapdragon 835 (10nm process) and Adreno 540 GPU. It features a dual-glass design with a metal frame, and a dual-camera system. The 6GB RAM model is highly recommended. The 128GB version is currently priced at 2699 yuan, which is more valuable than the 64GB version at 2499 yuan.
The Xiaomi Mix 2, launched in 2017, features an 18:9 screen ratio, making it more rounded and natural compared to the original Mix. It retains the same top-tier configuration. The 256GB version is currently priced at 3199 yuan. I suspect it will be discounted further during the Double 11 period.
**3. Red Rice Note 4X – Affordable and Practical**The Red Rice Note 4X uses the Snapdragon 625 processor and is cost-effective. The 3GB version is priced at 899 yuan, while the 4GB version is 1099 yuan. It’s a great option for a backup phone or for older family members. Make sure to look for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 version, not MediaTek.
**2. Huawei – High-End with Overseas Pricing**1. Huawei Mate 10 – Flagship for Business Use
The Huawei Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch 16:9 2K screen and front-mounted fingerprint recognition. It uses the Kirin 970 chip with NPU for AI tasks and supports PC mode via a cable.
As a new model, it should see its first price drop during the Double 11 period.
2. Huawei Mate 9 – Cost-Effective Option
The Huawei Mate 9 has seen its price drop significantly. It features the Kirin 960 chip and is a reliable choice. Recently, the price was 2789 yuan, which is very cost-effective. GOME has already sold out, so expect the price to drop further during Double 11.
**3. Smartisan Nut Pro – A Unique Design**Despite its unconventional design, the Smartisan Nut Pro is a powerful device. It supports fast charging, reverse charging, and runs the Smartisan OS with useful features like SMS management and intelligent drag-and-drop.
Recently, it was priced at 1299 yuan, but it’s no longer available. Keep an eye on the Double 11 period for a possible return.
**4. Vivo and Oppo – The "Blue and Green" Brands**Some may question why I recommend Vivo and Oppo, especially for their low-cost high-end designs. However, their user experience is exceptional. Features like the VOOC flash charging, advanced beauty camera, and HiFi chips make them stand out. Their build quality is also top-notch.
I recommend the Vivo X20, as it offers great performance and design. The price has already dropped, and more discounts are expected during the Double 11 period.
**5. Meizu – Solving Patent Issues with Qualcomm**1. Meizu Pro 7 – The Annual Flagship
The Meizu Pro 7 features a black-and-white dual camera and a dual-screen display. It also includes a dedicated music chip and HiFi support. Though it doesn’t use the latest Qualcomm chips, it offers excellent value. The price recently dropped to 2099 yuan, and I expect it to be discounted further during Double 11.
2. Meizu Note 6 – The "Charm Blue" Flagship
The Meizu Note 6 is the first Qualcomm-powered phone in recent years. It uses the Snapdragon 625 and offers solid performance. It’s suitable for those seeking a balanced device. During Double 11, the price is expected to drop.
**In Summary**The above list covers only a few of the many smartphones worth buying during the Double 11 period. Others like the Qihoo 360 N5S and Nubia Z17S also offer great value. If you're interested in international models like Google Pixel or Essential Phone, feel free to explore. Due to space limitations, I’ll stop here.
