eyeDriver software that uses the eyes to control the direction of the car

Scientists at the Free University of Berlin in Germany have brought a new set of rules for motorists: using their developed eyeDriver software, the driver can guide the car through different directions.

The research team led by Raúl Rojas, an expert in artificial intelligence, is responsible for the project. At the site of the Tempelhof airport in Berlin, Rojas demonstrated to more than 60 journalists from all over the world the process of controlling the car with eyes.

The eyeDriver software was used in the eye control of the car. The software was developed by the Free University of Berlin and the German SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI). The eyeDriver collects the movement of the driver's eye and translates it into a control signal to control the car's steering wheel. However, eyeDriver does not include a vehicle speed control system.

Researchers say the HED4 device developed by SMI can be used to detect and track eye movements. The HED4 device is actually made by retrofitting a bicycle helmet with two cameras and an infrared light-emitting diode. It is also equipped with a microcomputer loaded with special software. The driver wears a helmet, the camera pointing to the front of the helmet is called a "live camera", and the other camera takes one of the driver's eyes, called the "eyeball camera." The infrared light from the eye movement camera is directed at the driver's eye; the transparent mirror disposed on the device reflects the infrared light of the eye movement camera. Through this mirror, not only can the angle of view of the eye movement camera be adjusted, but also the driver's observation ability can be effectively ensured. After calibrating the software in the microcomputer, HED4 can be used to capture the position of the pupil. At the same time, the position of the driver's observation point can be calculated from the data returned by the live camera. The coordinates of the driver's observation point are transmitted to the car's computer via a normal LAN. Through the car LAN, the eyeDriver software on the on-board computer periodically receives the driver's observation position and controls the steering wheel through the eyeDriver.

The driver can drive in two modes: "free driving" mode and "path selection" mode.

The "free driving" mode calculates the ideal position of the steering wheel by the X coordinate of the observer's observation point. When the driver looks to the left or looks to the right, the steering wheel will turn in the same direction. The speed of the car is preset and remains the same. In case the system does not detect the direction of the driver's gaze, for example, if the driver's eyes are closed, the car will automatically stop.

In the “path selection” mode, when the car is at a fork or intersection, the car will stop and “ask” where the driver should go. This requires the driver to watch left or right for 3 seconds. If the driver gaze in the same direction for more than 3 seconds, the artificial intelligence on the car will determine the line accordingly and continue to "drive" the car.

Raul Rojas said that the improvement of traffic accidents and the improvement of traffic efficiency are of great significance when the technology of guiding the car is perfected.
