It is believed that this helicopter-like drone could soon become a new form of urban transportation. As the drone market continues to grow rapidly, Workhorse has recently announced that it will conduct its first public flight test of the SureFly, a manned rotorcraft, at the 2018 CES Consumer Electronics Show. The SureFly can carry two people and has a maximum range of 70 miles. However, its price is quite high—around $200,000.
Based in Ohio, Workhorse will unveil the latest version of the SureFly for its first public flight demonstration at the upcoming CES event in Las Vegas on January 8th next year. A photo of the hybrid SureFly drone, which will be showcased for the first time at the event, is displayed below.
According to a Workhorse spokesperson, “CES is the perfect platform to present the SureFly. It’s one of the most significant technology events globally, and the SureFly exemplifies how innovation can reshape the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft industry.â€
Earlier this year, the futuristic carbon fiber SureFly made its debut at the Paris Air Show. It can carry up to 400 pounds, features eight independent rotor systems, and uses a hybrid powertrain combining gasoline and parallel battery packs.
The initial version of the SureFly will allow for manned flights but won’t include full autonomous cruise capabilities. It can fly continuously for 112 kilometers at a top speed of 112 km/h. Beyond its performance, the SureFly is also designed with practicality in mind—its rotors can fold down, making it easy to store in a regular garage.
Dektas, a representative from Workhorse, stated that the SureFly redefines traditional helicopters. Pilots can operate it like a drone, making it user-friendly and straightforward to handle.
According to Deltas, the eight-rotor aircraft isn't intended for individual consumers alone but is more suited for applications such as agriculture, emergency response, urban commuting, military operations, and cargo transport.
Workhorse has previously introduced various electric and hybrid vehicles, including drones, pickup trucks, and commercial vehicles. Their goal is to develop aircraft that are safer, more stable, and environmentally friendly.
While the early models of the SureFly require manual operation, the company's long-term vision is to achieve fully autonomous flight capable of carrying up to 180 kilograms of cargo. Workhorse believes these flying machines could find their first real-world applications in agriculture, rescue missions, city commuting, and the military sectors.
Stephen Burns, CEO of Workhorse, said, “The helicopter has existed for 78 years, and now it's finally been reinvented. It's an honor to introduce the SureFly on the global stage, and we believe it marks a major milestone in aviation history.â€
Burns added, “We've ensured there's no single point of failure in the aircraft. If the engine fails, the backup battery can keep it airborne for five minutes, giving you enough time to land safely. Even if two or three of the eight rotors fail, such as from bird strikes, the plane can still land. That’s exactly what ‘SureFly’ means—you can hover and stop mid-air.â€
From a personal perspective, the ideal use case for the average consumer would be using this flying taxi to quickly and easily commute to work every day. While the retail price is expected to reach around $200,000 by 2019, it's still a concept that is becoming more tangible and achievable.
