ON Semiconductor Introduces New Class of CCD Image Sensors to Redefine Low Light Imaging Performance

ON Semiconductor, a leader in energy-efficient innovation, has introduced a groundbreaking class of charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensor technology. This new advancement sets a new standard for low-light imaging in industrial markets. The KAE-02150 is the first image sensor to leverage this innovative technology, offering 1080p video capture across a wide range of lighting conditions—from bright daylight to near-starlight levels. This breakthrough expands the capabilities of single-camera systems, making it ideal for applications where light is scarce, such as surveillance, defense, scientific research, medical imaging, and intelligent transportation. The KAE-02150 combines ON Semiconductor’s industry-leading Interline Transfer (IT) CCD pixel design with a newly developed Electron Multiplication (EM) output structure. This integration delivers sub-electron noise performance and CCD-level image quality and uniformity in extremely low-light environments. Chris McNiffe, Vice President of Image Sensor Business at ON Semiconductor, stated that this sensor represents a major leap forward, enabling customers to achieve unprecedented performance in challenging imaging scenarios. One of the key features of the KAE-02150 is its innovative output circuit design, which allows for both traditional CCD (low gain) and EMCCD (high gain) outputs on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This enables high dynamic range (HDR) imaging by selectively routing charge packets based on light intensity. Bright areas of the image are directed to the conventional CCD output, while low-light regions are sent to the EMCCD output. This dual-gain approach ensures accurate representation of both bright and dark areas, providing dynamic compensation in complex lighting situations. Built on the proven TRUESENSE 5.5-micron IT-CCD platform, the KAE series delivers global shutter functionality, excellent image uniformity, and high modulation transfer function (MTF). The platform supports a wide range of resolutions, from 1 million to 29 megapixels. Future expansions will include additional optical formats and pixel sizes to meet diverse application needs. Sample units of the KAE-02150 are available in monochrome and Bayer color configurations. An evaluation kit, including hardware and software, will be released by the end of 2014, allowing customers to test the sensor's performance in their specific applications. The KAE-02150 will be showcased at the ON Semiconductor booth (1C82) during the 2014 VISION trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany, from November 4th to 6th.
