LEDs are ubiquitous in our daily lives and are increasingly being utilized in large-screen, high-definition TVs, automobiles, street lighting, workspaces, and homes. Over the last few years, the continuous reduction in LED prices has spurred the global LED lighting market to thrive. However, we're now witnessing the second wave of the LED lighting industry. Next-generation LED optical technology offers more comfortable, secure, high-quality, and networked LED lighting solutions at more affordable prices. Light Polymers, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in chemical materials, is transforming the LED lighting sector with its innovative and patented water-based liquid crystal materials.
Light Polymers focuses on synthesizing aqueous liquid crystal materials for various applications. The company employs this unique chemical material in LED down-conversion to develop new Crystallin products, including architectural recessed lights, beauty lamps, LED lamps for red-light therapy, plant and fish/animal growth lights, professional photography lights, and advanced personal lighting solutions. Among these, the recessed light products were introduced to the Asian market via sales partners and online channels in August and made their debut in the U.S. in November.

"Light Polymers' advanced polymer technology differs significantly from traditional fixed-color LED packaging technology," remarked Marc McConnaughey, CEO of Light Polymers, during an exclusive interview with LEDinside. "While light conversion technology isn't new to the LED industry, it hasn't been widely adopted due to limitations in implementation and cost."
In the past, high color rendering (CRI) lighting was primarily used in places like museums where specific performance requirements were critical. Light Polymers' water-based liquid crystal material technology enables lamps to emit comfortable and uniform light, offering a full color gamut (high CRI) with low glare and minimal UV leakage. Since Light Polymers' chemical materials reduce manufacturing costs, these ultra-high-quality lighting products can compete in the market at a more reasonable price point.

"Light Polymers' technology includes water-based liquid crystal materials with special properties that tightly encapsulate phosphors to maximize blue light conversion," explained Dr. Huang Zhihao of Light Polymers. "This means that a variety of low- and medium-power blue LEDs can be used, eliminating expensive binning or selection processes and reducing the need for costly large heat sinks for high-brightness LEDs. Products developed using this technology minimize color shifts and brightness degradation while being more energy-efficient than traditional LED lighting devices."
**Mastering the Market Niche with Reasonably Priced High-CRI LED Downlights**
Light Polymers' Crystallin downlights carve out a new niche in the fiercely competitive LED downlight market. This is the thinnest recessed light on the market, offering museum-grade lighting for home or commercial use at a price point that's accessible to the masses.
"We can design any spectrum within a few days. We will introduce a custom service to provide different spectral phosphor films based on customer needs," said Zhang Jiarong, Vice President of Light Polymers. "The recessed light market is cost-sensitive, but we believe there’s a demand for high-CRI recessed lights at reasonable prices." Light Polymers' 6-inch recessed lamp, Crystallin Gold, boasts high color rendering (CRI greater than 98), color temperatures of 3000K and 5000K, with a recommended retail price (MSRP) of $14.99. Other 6-inch downlight products include Crystallin Red (ideal for sleep-friendly environments), Crystallin Orange (suitable for light-sensitive settings like semiconductor factories or coders), Crystallin Salon (designed for nail salons), and Crystallin Grow (a houseplant growth lamp).
Light Polymers also offers Crystallin Custom services, allowing clients to tailor the spectrum. The company has also invested in multi-layer film development, improving luminous efficiency by over 30% compared to traditional lamps.
"At present, the efficiency of LED design has stabilized. To further enhance overall efficiency, the focus is on developing more efficient optical components," McConnaughey stated.

**Thriving LED Plant Lighting**
For LED lighting manufacturers, plant lighting represents a lucrative market. LEDinside estimates that the global LED plant lighting market will grow from $576 million in 2016 to $1.42 billion by 2020.
"Light Polymers' chemical technology helps develop low-cost LED light conversion technology and offers new ways to create plant lights," said Marc McConnaughey. "Existing LED processes cannot yet design and provide specialized spectra according to customer requirements, and the production lead times are lengthy. Our plant growth lamps are designed for vertical farms to achieve maximum luminous efficiency and photon flux density (PPFD). By using light conversion technology and simple, low-cost blue LEDs, we can offer precise growth spectra tailored to customer needs."
Light Polymers will soon introduce GrowBlade light-conversion flat-panel lamps, including sizes 300x300mm, 300x600mm, 300x1200mm, and 300x1500mm. With high luminous efficiency, GrowBlades are designed for indoor farms requiring a fixed spectrum while balancing low capital and operational costs. GrowBlades feature a uniform-glowing Crystallin film with a 3 cm ultra-thin design, providing more planting space and increasing vertical farm productivity. Through large-area illumination and the special Crystallin Grow film spectroscopy, not only is light quality improved, but crop yields are enhanced. Initial field tests indicate that one GrowBlade can replace 2 to 3 tubes of multi-color packaged LEDs.

As medical and recreational marijuana legalization spreads across many countries, it is expected to further boost global demand for LED plant lighting. Light Polymers aims to capitalize on this niche market by helping plants achieve optimal growth through innovative plant lights and unique top and side lighting designs.

**Beauty Red LED Phototherapy**
Beyond LED downlights and plant lighting, Light Polymers will launch beauty-specific red light therapy products this fall. Light Polymers' advanced light conversion films use low-cost blue LEDs to provide red light for phototherapy at a much lower cost than previous generations of technology. Light Polymers has recently showcased a 660nm phototherapy red light film.
"Aqueous liquid crystal materials can be used in many high-performance professional applications at reasonable prices," said Ye Meijun, Asia Business Development Manager at Light Polymers. "High-end hotels are already reaching out to us, hoping to install related equipment to offer red light treatments to their tenants."
Red light therapy has been FDA-approved for use in the U.S. A NASA study found that red light can relax muscles, regenerate gums, reduce wrinkles, and repair sunburned skin. Light Polymers' red light products are available in 300x600mm and 300x1200mm sizes and are designed with a modern consumer electronics aesthetic in mind.
