It’s widely known that pickup trucks are quite popular among many people. They exude a certain rugged charm, especially when it comes to imported models like the Ford Raptor. These vehicles are not just practical but also luxurious and well-built. While domestic pickup trucks are often more affordable, other brands tend to be quite pricey. Consequently, many young enthusiasts enjoy driving a pickup truck for its unique appeal. Among high-end pickup options currently available, brands like the Raptor and SORODE stand out, though they don't come cheap. Despite not being particularly flashy, these brands remain highly sought after by aficionados. Even in China, where regulations require reflective strips on such vehicles, their popularity remains undiminished.
If I mentioned that Mercedes-Benz also ventured into the world of pickups, would anyone consider it a mere farming vehicle? Even abroad, it wouldn't be suitable for agricultural work. This time, Mercedes-Benz truly embraced the pickup truck concept with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Built on the same platform as the Nissan Navara, this model is primarily aimed at markets like Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, and Australia. There are no immediate plans for it to hit the Chinese or American markets yet, but it has already begun sales in Germany, priced around 290,000 yuan.
Though sharing the same platform as the Navara, one might question the true potential of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. To start with, let's discuss its exterior design. Although this is Mercedes-Benz’s first attempt at a pickup, they’ve been planning their entry into this segment since 2015. Last year, they unveiled the X-Class concept model, which bears a striking resemblance to previous designs. The X-Class combines elements from various Mercedes-Benz models, featuring a front grille reminiscent of the China Net style and a lower frame with distinct characteristics. Its dual-frame grille and wing-shaped headlights on either side are quintessential Mercedes-Benz features.
High-end models will come equipped with LED lighting, enhancing their upscale appearance. The new bumper design offers multiple variations, catering to consumer preferences from low-end to high-end configurations. For instance, lower-end models will feature a plain black bumper, while higher-end ones will showcase chrome plates adorned with various embellishments, exuding luxury and style.
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class measures 5340*1920*1819mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 3150mm. The cargo bed dimensions are 1587*1560*474mm. The vehicle also includes a lighting system for the cargo area, comprising LED light sets and high parking brake lights. Additionally, a 12V power outlet will be installed in the cargo bed to cater to diverse power requirements. Different models will be equipped with 17-inch, 18-inch, and even 19-inch wheels, with dynamic rim designs ensuring the vehicle doesn’t lose its elegance.
The rear styling is straightforward, highlighted by a new vertical bumper taillight design incorporating LED lighting for improved visibility. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class offers various rear bumper shapes, but some users aren’t fond of these designs. In response, Mercedes-Benz has introduced optional side steps, side rails, and cargo bed covers, allowing owners to customize their vehicles for practicality, off-road capabilities, or both.
When it comes to interior design, Mercedes-Benz’s expertise shines through. The X-Class draws inspiration from the V-Class, offering three distinct interior styles—matte black, aluminum-effect, and brown wood grain. Artificial leather adorns the center console, while circular air vents create a welcoming ambiance. The central control floating screen measures 8.4 inches and includes features like panoramic imaging and navigation, ensuring technological sophistication.
Despite its premium positioning, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class manages to strike a balance between luxury and functionality, appealing to those looking for something beyond traditional farm vehicles.
