STMicroelectronics supports plug-in hybrid car chargers, solar generators and other applications for miniaturization of inverters

STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor and power solutions, has introduced a new line of automotive-grade silicon carbide (SiC) diodes designed to meet the growing demand for high-power, space-efficient components in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and on-board chargers (OBCs). These advanced diodes are ideal for next-generation power systems where compactness and efficiency are critical. The new SiC diodes enable engineers to design smaller, more efficient power modules that not only enhance performance in automotive applications but also support the industry's push toward inverter miniaturization. This aligns with initiatives like Google’s $1 million challenge to develop inverters that are ten times smaller than current models, particularly for solar micro-generator applications. Italy-based France Semiconductor is one of the key partners involved in this open innovation effort. One of the key advantages of these diodes is their enhanced overcurrent protection, offering a 2.5x rated current capacity. This allows designers to use smaller, cost-effective diodes without compromising reliability or energy efficiency. Additionally, the new SiC diodes have been tested for automotive-grade reliability, featuring a reverse breakdown voltage of 650V. This ensures a sufficient safety margin between the device's nominal voltage and peak voltage, meeting the strict requirements of automotive manufacturers. As wide-bandgap (WBG) technology, silicon carbide offers significant improvements in energy efficiency compared to traditional silicon-based components. The new 650V SiC diodes come in various package options, including the STPSC10H065DY (10A, TO-220AC), STPSC12H065DY (12A, TO-220AC), STPSC20H065CTY (dual 10A, TO-220AB), and STPSC20H065CWY (dual 10A, TO-247). These packages are optimized for space-saving and weight reduction in on-board charging systems, making them an excellent choice for modern EV designs.
