STMicroelectronics supports plug-in hybrid car chargers, solar generators and other applications for miniaturization of inverters

STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor and power solutions, has launched a new line of automotive-grade silicon carbide (SiC) diodes designed to meet the growing demands of electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and on-board battery chargers (OBCs). These advanced diodes are engineered to deliver High Power performance within compact spaces, addressing key challenges in modern automotive electronics. The new SiC diodes enable engineers to design smaller, more efficient power modules that are ideal for next-generation electric vehicles. They have become a preferred choice for overcoming miniaturization challenges, including those highlighted by Google’s $1 million challenge for inverters that are less than one-tenth the size of current models. This initiative encourages innovation in solar micro-generator and kilowatt-level inverter designs, with Italy France Semiconductor as a key partner in this open innovation effort. One of the standout features of these diodes is their enhanced overcurrent protection, which is 2.5 times the rated current. This allows designers to use smaller, more cost-effective, and energy-efficient diodes without compromising reliability. The improved safety features make them a game-changer in power system design. These SiC diodes are rated for automotive applications, with a polarity reversal breakdown voltage of 650V. This increase ensures a greater safety margin between the device's nominal voltage and peak voltage, meeting the strict requirements of automotive manufacturers looking to reduce voltage derating and improve system efficiency. As a wide-bandgap (WBG) technology, silicon carbide offers superior energy efficiency compared to traditional silicon-based components. The new 650V SiC diodes include the STPSC10H065DY (10A in TO-220AC), STPSC12H065DY (12A in TO-220AC), STPSC20H065CTY (dual 10A in TO-220AB), and STPSC20H065CWY (dual 10A in TO-247). These options maximize space utilization and help reduce the weight of car chargers, making them ideal for high-performance EV systems.
