A group of developers from the Tattoodo app were looking for a better way to categorize the vast collection of photos they had amassed, so they developed an algorithm. This created a neural network for their partners and taught it how to use the iPhone camera to recognize and classify tattoo styles.
This process involved using a deep learning framework known as "Caffe" and feeding it datasets containing images of various tattoo styles. Once the training was complete, the AI could accurately identify tattoo styles.
Tattooing is personal and permanent. It symbolizes memories of the past. For centuries, the fundamental process of getting a tattoo has remained unchanged, much the same as it was millennia ago before electricity became widespread.
However, one thing we’re discovering is that you can apply artificial intelligence to anything and improve it. Dennis 燤icky燡ensen and Goran 燯uksic, both developers, are leveraging visual recognition, which is beneficial for anyone considering a tattoo. While artificial intelligence hasn’t yet been integrated into the app (they’re still collecting data), they plan to complete the AI training and continue refining their system. Via email, Vuksic explained:
"Before implementing this in our application, we want to use this model to classify our images. We have 360,000 photos, and only 100,000 of them are currently categorized (these are the images we use to train our neural networks). The AI will assist us in classifying the remaining 250,000 photos. Classification is crucial for us because it allows us to provide users with personalized recommendations based on their preferred styles, the artists they admire, the expertise of those artists, and more."
Without AI to organize the images, users would have to manually view each photo, decide on its style, tag it, and create metadata so others could find it. All of this can be handled by robots, significantly improving efficiency.
