DVB-H mobile digital TV knowledge

Mobile digital broadcast television (DTV) combines the two best-selling consumer products of all time-television and mobile phones. TV is expected to be the main driver of the demand for a new generation of wireless mobile phones, as consumers want to integrate communications and entertainment in the same device.

At all levels of the mobile DTV value chain, telecom operators, mobile phone suppliers, infrastructure owners, content providers, broadcasters, and semiconductor suppliers have spared no effort to continue to increase investment, and this is reasonable. According to the analysis company Informa data, by 2011, the number of users in the mobile TV market will reach 210 million, and 10% of the mobile handheld terminals sold have the function of broadcast TV receivers.

The world of mobile DTV

There are many forms of mobile TV in the world, and they can propagate signals through various radio broadcast networks. Each form uses different transmission methods, such as unicast, multicast and broadcast. Each method has its own advantages, but only by integrating these three methods can it bring the best experience to consumers.

The unicast service is mainly used to send small video files or streaming media content (such as TV programs) to a single mobile phone user through a cellular network. The technology can be used to achieve higher average user revenue (ARPU), but if the unicast service is too popular, it may cause the cellular network to degrade performance when the demand for unicast services is high. These video services, which can now be provided by multi-service providers, enable consumers to have a more comfortable experience when enjoying broadcast programs on their mobile phones;

Multicast services also use cellular networks, but provide one-to-many services, that is, send the same content to multiple users at the same time. Although this improves bandwidth utilization, the consumption of network bandwidth by multicast cannot be underestimated;

The broadcast service is the focus of this article, which uses an independent radio broadcast network to transmit broadcast TV content. Each user can receive and play the same content through a mobile phone that supports the broadcast function without affecting the network capacity of the operator. There are currently several different broadcast and television service standards in the world, and all standards are currently in the trial operation stage, that is, they have been deployed by consumers;

The perfect integration of the above three communication methods can not only achieve the best user experience, but also bring revenue generating opportunities for cellular operators. Operators can provide broadcast and television programs (generally 20 channels) for the majority of users. The brand-new mobile application, which is in the design stage, will allow users to retrieve specific program content on demand using a convenient unicast method. Interactive advertising allows users to purchase or view a product just watched on a TV broadcast through a mobile browser. Functions such as personal video recorders (PVR) can be used to download and store large amounts of audio and video files during periods of low cellular system usage (such as nighttime).

Mobile broadcast DTV standard

As with most new technologies, there are currently several different mobile radio and television standards in the world. These standards include the three major open standards developed by industry associations:

DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) is derived from the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) standard for digital radio broadcasting and was originally used for satellite broadcasting services. DMB has been identified as the terrestrial antenna tower broadcast service in South Korea, called T-DMB. The DMB business has now been put into commercial deployment in South Korea and is in trial operation in other parts of Europe and Asia (DAB networks are mostly off-the-shelf).

DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld Terminal) evolved from the DVB standard used in European cable, satellite and terrestrial TV services. DVB-H's low-power mode is not only ideal for battery-powered devices, but also significantly improves radio broadcast performance when used in mobile devices. The DVB-H standard has been commercially deployed in Europe and is being tested in other regions of the world.
