NFC technology: six ways to change our daily life

On May 10th, Beijing time, the American science and technology blog site Mashable said in a recent article that near field communication technology (near field communicaTIon, hereinafter referred to as "NFC") has huge market growth potential and changes our daily life in at least multiple business areas lifestyle. From the perspective of new technology, NFC is not a very novel concept, but the technology has huge market growth potential. During 2004, the three companies Nokia, Sony and Philips co-founded the "NFC Forum" to jointly promote this short-range wireless connection technology. Soon after, Samsung, Motorola, Microsoft and more than 140 other organizations have also become members of the forum.

The general working principle of NFC technology is to allow a certain device (usually a mobile phone) to collect data from another device or NFC tag within a limited range. To some extent, this technology is quite similar to the contactless payment card integrated inside the mobile phone. In other words, NFC technology is very similar to Bluetooth technology. But NFC technology does not need to set up both connected devices, and only needs a simple device contact to establish a wireless connection.

In 2007, Nokia launched its first business phone with NFC technology. Afterwards, the NFC Forum holds a technology competition every year to reward those who are conducive to the promotion of NFC technology. Since then, many countries around the world have begun testing NFC products. Currently, more than 100 NFC technology development projects are in progress worldwide. Like any other new technology, the current market awareness of NFC technology needs to be improved. But over time, NFC technology will undoubtedly enter the ranks of mainstream applications.

NFC technology will have a major impact on our daily life in the following six aspects:

1. Contactless payment

Unlike other wireless technologies, the usable range of NFC technology is about 1.5 inches. In this way, NFC technology is conducive to improving the security of transactions, such as contactless credit card payment and so on. Two credit card service providers, MasterCard and Visa, are already members of the NFC Forum and have already participated in technical tests related to NFC mobile payment. In addition, this "digital wallet" service concept can also be extended to merchant coupons and other service areas.

2. Transportation

NFC technology can be applied to most contactless smart cards and readers, which means that NFC technology can be easily integrated into public transport payment systems in major cities. In 2008, the German railway company Deutsche Bahn tested the NFC payment service on its railway line: after passengers board the train, they only need to touch their mobile phone with an NFC tag, and then touch another tag to get off the train. The payment process of train travel expenses will be included in the passenger's monthly mobile phone bill.

3. Medical and health

In the field of medical and health, using NFC tags, the attending doctor can not only query the cases related to the patient, but also understand the treatment status the patient has received before. When the attending doctor performs such a scan, the doctor's relevant information is also stored in the corresponding database. In this way, not only can the effect on individual patients be strengthened, but also a powerful medical information database can be established.

4. Convenient and easy to use

If smart phones based on NFC technology are becoming more and more popular, two consumers only need to touch their phones to play a two-person role game. Consumers only need to touch the phone with the printing device to print the photos taken by their phones. If the user ca n’t remember the names of other people, they can also tag them with pictures.

5. Smart goals

A large amount of information can be stored in the NFC tag, such as bus lines and stations, theaters, hotels and bars. After the merchant stores their information in the NFC tag, consumers only need to scan the NFC tag to know the discount and promotion information of the merchant.

6. Social media

While Foursquare, a mobile phone geographic location service in the United States, has received attention from outsiders, a German company called Servtag is launching a similar service. This service called "FriendTIcker" has placed more than 250 NFC tags in different locations in Berlin, Germany. Consumers only need to scan these tags with NFC mobile phones, which is equivalent to publishing information to other friends: they have already visited the NFC The location of the label.
