Broadcom's $117 billion bid to acquire Qualcomm, a leading U.S. semiconductor company based in California, has sparked widespread discussion across the tech industry. Despite facing significant challenges, Broadcom has remained committed to completing the deal. To address concerns raised by the U.S. government over national security, the company has pledged not to share sensitive data with foreign entities and has also promised to prioritize hiring and training American engineers, aiming to strengthen the U.S. position in the 5G technology race.
However, on March 13, President Donald Trump issued an executive order blocking Broadcom’s acquisition of Qualcomm, citing national security risks. He argued that the deal would essentially give a foreign entity control over a critical U.S. technology firm, and as a result, all 15 board nominees proposed by Broadcom were disqualified from serving on Qualcomm’s board.
Following the presidential decision, Wall Street analysts speculated that Broadcom, known for its aggressive business strategies, might struggle to finalize the acquisition. Some even suggested that the company could look elsewhere for new targets.
Indeed, according to The Motley Fool, a well-respected financial news platform in the U.S., Broadcom is reportedly exploring alternative acquisition opportunities. Among the potential targets are MediaTek, a major chipmaker in Taiwan, as well as U.S.-based companies Cirrus Logic and Xilinx. These moves indicate that while the Qualcomm deal may be dead, Broadcom is far from being idle in its pursuit of growth through strategic acquisitions.
