Wireless coverage is a critical aspect of network performance, but the range of wireless signals depends not only on the base station's capabilities but also on the technical specifications of the connected devices. Standard WiFi clients typically have limited uplink power—around 15dBm—which restricts their ability to communicate effectively over long distances. Even if the base station has strong downlink power, the client’s weak uplink can severely limit its reach. In contrast, Wireless CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) is designed for outdoor use and offers significantly better performance. It can extend the communication distance up to four times that of a standard WiFi client, making it ideal for long-range wireless connectivity.
In real-world scenarios, achieving a clear line of sight between the CPE and the base station is rare. However, based on practical measurements and wireless propagation models, a properly configured CPE can maintain stable connections over distances ranging from 1km to 5km. This makes it an excellent solution for applications like outdoor monitoring, building network expansion, and remote access.
A Wireless CPE functions as a wireless bridge, commonly used in outdoor environments. It acts as a point-to-point connection, transmitting data between two locations wirelessly. These devices often operate on the 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz frequency bands. While 2.4GHz is widely used, it is prone to interference, which has led to the adoption of cleaner 5.8GHz channels in many modern setups. CPEs are essential for connecting remote areas where wired infrastructure is impractical.
**Tools/Equipment**
- Wireless Bridge: LF-P588, P581, P591 series
- Installation accessories: Triangle bracket, elevation bracket, metal steel ring
- Setup tools: Computer or smartphone
**Installation Steps**
1. Purchase the main unit, spare parts, and check all components, including the bridge host, POE power adapter, metal steel ring, and mounting brackets. Choose either a triangle or elevation bracket based on your installation needs.
2. Before installing the device outdoors, configure the indoor bridge settings. Connect the network cable to the bridge’s WAN port and the other end to the POE port of the power adapter. The LAN port should be connected to your computer. Note that the POE port provides both power and communication, while the LAN port connects to a computer or router.
3. After setting up, disconnect the computer and connect the bridge to the gateway or switch. Then, move the bridge to the desired outdoor location and install it on a pole using the selected bracket.
4. Use the triangle bracket to mount the bridge. First, secure the U-shaped bracket to the pole with nuts, then attach the bridge. Adjust the angle as needed for optimal signal reception.
5. For wall mounting, use expansion screws to fix the bracket to the wall. Secure the bridge to the bracket and adjust its orientation for best performance.
6. Configure your computer’s IP address manually. Set it to 192.168.188.10 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
7. Open a web browser and type 192.168.188.253 to access the device management interface.
8. Set the transmitter bridge A to static IP mode in the advanced settings. Ensure the receiver bridge B is also configured similarly.
9. Test the connection by accessing the receiver bridge’s management page from the transmitter. If you can log in, the setup is successful.
**Precautions**
- Obstacles like trees, buildings, or metal structures can weaken wireless signals. Ensure a clear line of sight between CPEs during installation.
- Adjust the antenna direction to ensure the receiving device is within the signal range. Tools like Google Maps or GPS can help determine the correct orientation.
- Always set the AP or relay mode and replace DHCP with a static IP.
- If you encounter issues, try pinging 192.168.188.253. If it doesn’t work, consider using a different browser or rechecking the connections.
**Challenges in Traditional Outdoor Coverage**
Traditional outdoor coverage relies on a base station AP to provide WLAN access. However, this approach faces several challenges. For instance, the base station may have high transmit power (up to 500mW), while user terminals typically have low power (around 20mW). This mismatch can lead to situations where the terminal receives the signal but the base station cannot detect it, resulting in poor uplink performance.
Additionally, when covering residential areas, the signal strength inside buildings can drop significantly due to walls and structural interference. This leads to weak indoor coverage and a poor user experience.
**CPE Solution for Outdoor Coverage**
The CPE-based solution addresses these issues by using dedicated outdoor devices that establish a stronger link with the base station. These CPEs have higher transmit power (up to 500mW) and directional antennas, which improve signal quality and extend coverage. This method is particularly effective in rural areas where interference is minimal.
Currently, 2.4GHz is commonly used for outdoor CPE deployments, allowing coverage of up to 1.5–2 km. As demand grows, solutions such as 5G CPE and dual-band APs are being introduced to increase capacity and improve performance.
**Deployment Modes**
When deploying CPEs on the 2.4GHz band, up to three APs can be placed on a single base station, each operating on different channels (1, 6, 11). This allows for sector-based coverage, serving different villages or areas.
**Expanding for High-Density Areas**
As more users join, capacity expansion becomes necessary. Two main approaches include:
- **5G CPE Expansion**: Introducing 5G frequency bands increases available channels, improving capacity and reducing interference.
- **5G Bridge Backhaul Expansion**: Adding a new AP with 5G backhaul allows for extended coverage without disrupting existing networks.
These methods ensure reliable connectivity even in densely populated areas.
