Cypress's new touch screen controller targets emerging large screen market

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced today that it will introduce a new TrueTouch® Gen4X touchscreen controller that supports advanced features and large screens at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The new Gen4X TMA448 controller delivers the industry's best glove touch and noise immunity, delivering a high-performance touchscreen experience for large-screen phones, smartphones, tablets and e-books, and meeting the cost-sensitive Chinese market Demand.

The TrueTouch Gen4X TMA448 controller allows users of different materials and thicknesses of gloves (including ski gloves) to achieve the industry's best accuracy and linearity on the touch screen, and it can automatically switch between glove mode and finger mode. No intervention from the main processor is required. The competitor's solution requires the main processor to intervene, requiring the user to manually configure the touch input settings, thus complicating the user's experience.

The TMA448 has up to 58 sensing I/Os and supports a maximum screen size of 8.3 inches to meet the system price requirements of customers in the emerging large-screen mobile phone and tablet market. The TMA448 and TrueTouch Gen4X series have the ability to withstand the electronic noise interference of the brand-name charger and display, and the performance exceeds all competing solutions.

TrueTouch Gen4X

John Carey, senior director of marketing for Cypress TrueTouch, said: "Our predecessor, the Gen4 series, is widely adopted by industry leaders around the world because of its excellent noise immunity and outstanding performance in wet environments. TrueTouch Gen4x TMA448 controller Adds superior glove touch and is suitable for large-screen phones and tablets that are designed for consumers who want to experience rich touchscreen functionality without having to pay too much."

Cypress's TrueTouch Gen4X series is immune to charger noise and is capable of withstanding 35V peak-to-peak (Vpp) noise in the range of 1 to 599kHz under 0.5mm and 9mm finger test conditions. Cypress's proprietary DualSenseTM patented technology enables self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance sensing algorithms on the same chip, giving the industry the best waterproof and wet finger tracking performance in the rain, dew and sweat Work smoothly in the real environment. Cypress's single-layer, stand-alone multi-touch (SLIM®) sensor architecture enables the in-cell and on-cell touch integrated display architecture to deliver ultra-thin product shapes.

The TMA448 controller features a 32-bit ARM® CortexTM M core processor with high MIPS/mW performance and 21 parallel receive channels for 120 Hz refresh rate with an average operating power consumption as low as 2 mW The power consumption in deep sleep mode is only 15 uW.

Availability

Samples and volume products for this new Gen4X model will be available to leading customers in the second quarter of 2014. The product is packaged in a 56-pin 6 mm x 6 mm QFN and a 70-ball 5.5 mm x 5.5 mm BGA.
