MEMS technology achieves a brighter display and higher definition

Imagine a rear mounted HUD product on your car's sun visor that projects the direction of travel onto the windshield. Think again, your tablet with a built-in pico projector allows you to share large screen content anytime, anywhere. It is also conceivable that your near-eye display glasses can display information such as navigation and social media updates in front of your eyes. These are just a few examples of the many innovative applications that are based on advances in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) projection display technology.

MEMS technology achieves a brighter display and higher definition

At the heart of the MEMS-based TI DLP® PicoTM projection display technology is a set of highly reflective aluminum micromirrors called digital micromirror devices (DMDs). A DMD can contain millions of independently controlled micromirrors, each located at the top of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) memory cell associated with it. Together with the light source, a DMD operates as an electrical input-light output device, enabling developers to perform high-speed, efficient, and reliable spatial light modulation to generate projected images.

Advances in MEMS technology

Continuous innovation in the MEMS-based DMD space is providing developers with more opportunities to integrate projection-based display technology into a variety of applications for industrial, personal electronics, wearable, digital signage and enterprise markets.

One of the latest innovations is the reduction in size of MEMS-based aluminum micromirrors, key components in DMD. This reduction in size has achieved full HD 1080p resolution in a small MEMS package in microdisplay applications. Diffraction efficiency, system brightness, and contrast are reduced by simply reducing the size of the micromirrors without changing other micromirrors or parameters accordingly. However, increasing the tilt angle of the micromirrors to achieve faster system concentrating optics can compensate for possible diffraction efficiency losses and maintain system brightness. Improvements in manufacturing processes have minimized the impact on system contrast. Micro-projection technology is getting smaller, brighter, and more energy efficient, enabling innovative HD projection display applications in small products.

Innovative display applications using MEMS technology

Technological advances in MEMS applications in projection applications are laying the foundation for new applications. From desktops to smartphones to tablets, personal computing devices can now be equipped with MEMS display technology. In addition to common personal computing tasks, these devices are now able to convert almost any surface into a home theater or display for business presentation applications.

These plug-and-play products offer very high portability, HD resolution and low power consumption, and are ideal for many enterprise and consumer applications. Such versatile devices meet a wide range of user needs, including those who want to showcase their global customers, as well as parents who host the "Neighborhood Movie Night" in the backyard.

When MEMS technology is combined with motion sensing, the display has interactive features that allow the user to manipulate the display and interact with the display.

In addition to turning walls and other planes into usable screens, the small size, high resolution, low latency and low power consumption of next-generation MEMS devices make them augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) near-eye display applications. The ideal choice. MEMS technology enables wearable computing experiences, surreal video game systems and 3D movies for consumer applications, or industrial applications such as warehouse inventory management and training simulators.

As the demand for smaller, brighter, and more efficient HD display solutions continues to increase, MEMS technology continues to evolve until it can be incorporated into the interior of small devices—a few years ago. We expect this extremely flexible and versatile display technology to be used in more innovative applications in the future.
