New LG OLED TV Experience: Dark Field and Brightness Performance

LG released the new 2016 OLED TV series at this year's CES. Now people can finally experience the charm of this new series through one of them, the OLED55B6.

In the new OLED series, this 55-inch 4K TV is relatively low, with a suggested retail price of 2,999 pounds (approximately RMB 28,392). Although the OLED55B6 is slightly inferior to the top OLED products of the manufacturer, both in terms of design and audio performance, it is at least comparable in quality to the more expensive E6 and G6.

design

In terms of design, the 55B6 is not on the same level as the flagship G6, both in terms of frame and body thickness. However, the low-profile silver base is connected with the screen using a transparent material, giving a special "floating" feel.

The B6 was not equipped with the huge loudspeakers that could be seen on the new G6 and E6. Instead, it provided four-channel, 40-watt, Harman Kardon designed speakers. However, a large number of users will use their own equipment, whether it is a strip sound, sound base or surround sound system, this aspect is not so good or bad.

WebOS

The 55B6 is rightfully using LG's webOS smart TV operating system, preloaded with all kinds of latest streaming applications, supporting 4K and HDR streaming.

The biggest highlight of this TV is its support for native 4K resolution and HDR playback. In addition to HDR 10, the Dolby Vision HDR standard is also supported. The latter allows TVs to be based on their own by adding dynamic metadata to HDR video sources. Hardware performance continues to optimize playback.

The 55B6's OLED image-driven engine is very similar to that used on the new flagship model. However, due to differences in the chipset, the 55B6 does not support 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut as does the E6 or G6, but it still supports more than 90% of color, which is in line with the industry's UHD Premium standard.

In the actual test experience, the science-fiction film Jupiter Ascendant was used to test the film, and the 55B6 easily showed dazzling visual effects, especially in brightness. Although LG's opponents stated that only the LCD screen can display the brightness required for HDR content, the 55B6 is also not inferior in this respect.

Manufacturers said that LG's latest OLED TV can reach the brightness of up to 800 nits rather than the previous 540 nits.

The OLED technology used in the 55B6 allows each pixel to emit its own light, which allows the picture to be rendered more accurately, without the usual halo phenomena that appear in HDR-enabled LCD TVs that display bright areas.

In addition, the performance of black and dark areas is impressive. Black level has always been the strength of OLED technology. In the new era of HDR, this advantage can be fully utilized. The ability to present the deepest black in the spectrum is as significant as the significance of increasing the peak brightness.

Whether it is playing native 4K content or an upgraded Blu-ray source, the picture quality of the 55B6 is even clearer than the OLED TV introduced by LG in 2015.

After repeatedly watching HDR samples provided by the manufacturer, the testers found that the OLED's black level may fluctuate instantaneously when it is necessary to display a bright scene or object over an all-black area, but LG said it was launched in 2015. In terms of models, this phenomenon has been greatly reduced. The final finished product may completely eliminate such deficiencies.

In fact, if the performance of the 55B6 can consistently surpass the last year's OLED TVs during the long-term use, it is very likely to become the best OLED TV of the year, especially when various LCD TVs cannot perfectly play HDR content.
