Research and development of diamond LEDs with output power increased to 10 times


The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute has developed a diamond LED with a maximum output of 0.3 mW and exhibited it at the "nano tech 2010 (International Nanotechnology Exhibition, February 17-19)". Diamond LEDs are characterized by luminescence in the deep ultraviolet region, which can be used to kill E. coli and the like. It is said to be jointly developed with Iwasaki Electric and Shintec.

At the Institute of Applied Physics held in March 2009, the General Research Institute published information on the development of diamond LEDs. The output power at that time was 30 μW. This time is 0.3mW (300μW), which is 10 times. By increasing the output power, it is also possible to actually confirm the bactericidal effect against Escherichia coli.
