8 development forecasts based on Linux in 2018

In the blink of an eye, we've moved into 2018, but what happened in Linux during 2017, and what new trends are expected for this year? OMGUbuntu has made eight predictions about Linux development in 2018—see if you agree with them. Prediction 1: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be the most popular version in Ubuntu's history. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" is a major release that brings many changes, making it appealing to both new and experienced users. With improved performance, enhanced security features, and better support for cloud environments, it's expected to become a favorite among the community. Prediction 2: The Snap format will gain more support from software vendors. Snap has already attracted big names like Microsoft and Spotify. As Canonical continues to push the format, 2018 is likely to see even more companies adopt it, making it a more common way to distribute applications across Linux distributions. Prediction 3: Open source developers will embrace Flatpak. While Canonical focuses on promoting Snaps, other members of the Linux community are turning toward Flatpak and Flathub. With Red Hat’s influence, key applications may start using the Flatpak format, and many open source developers will choose to distribute their apps through Flathub. Prediction 4: Ubuntu will lead in the Internet of Things (IoT). Ubuntu Core is well-suited for IoT devices, offering a lightweight, secure, and upgradable system. It's expected to become the go-to OS for smart devices, helping standardize IoT environments and improve security across the board. Prediction 5: More distributions will adopt PipeWire. Fedora 27 already offers some support for PipeWire, and other Linux distributions are likely to follow suit. This new audio and video processing framework could bring better multimedia experiences across the Linux ecosystem. Prediction 6: Linux's market share will grow, though not dramatically. Although Linux isn’t taking over the desktop market, its presence is increasing, especially in servers, embedded systems, and laptops. While the growth might not be explosive, it’s steady and meaningful. Prediction 7: Linux battery management will improve. In 2018, more attention will be given to extending laptop battery life. This includes better graphics drivers, kernel improvements, and optimized desktop environments that reduce background processes, leading to longer-lasting batteries. Prediction 8: 2018 may not be the year for the Linux desktop, but it could be the year for Linux laptops. We can expect to see more pre-installed Linux notebooks from major manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and HP, as well as smaller OEMs such as Slimbook, Station X, and Entroware. This trend shows growing interest in Linux-powered portable devices.
