ADAS drives the car to use the memory upgrade debugging machine to make the key to victory

In-vehicle infotainment systems (IVI) are gaining widespread popularity, while advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies continue to evolve. As vehicle systems become more complex, the demand for data processing has surged, requiring higher memory capacity and faster input/output bandwidth. These needs must be met with appropriate upgrades. Moreover, automotive storage components must meet extremely high reliability and safety standards—far stricter than those in general consumer electronics like 3C devices. This means integrating robust mechanisms such as firmware debugging and real-time monitoring. Hu Wenji, a project manager at SMI’s product planning department, highlighted that early automotive storage solutions included SD cards, ROM, and PATA/SATA hard drives. Today, embedded 16GB eMMC and SSDs have become the mainstream storage options. eMMC is primarily used for booting the system and storing the operating system, often found in lower-end vehicles, while SSDs are used for multimedia content like audio, video, and maps. As smart vehicles advance rapidly, Huirong’s associate predicts that from 2020 onwards, Universal Flash Storage (UFS) will gradually replace eMMC in many applications. Car SSDs may also transition from PATA/SATA to PCIe interfaces. With stable production of 3D NAND flash, companies like Samsung and Micron are increasing their output. The report suggests that in the future, SSDs may shift to 3D MLC and even TLC NAND technology, balancing cost and capacity. Higher storage density allows in-vehicle systems to handle richer content and enhance user experience. However, ensuring data integrity becomes critical. The automotive industry typically tolerates only a few percent defect rate (DPPM) for IBI components, and nearly zero tolerance for safety-critical systems like dashboards and ADAS. For automated driving systems, error correction codes (ECC), cyclic redundancy checks (CRC), and data path protection (DPP) are essential. Some manufacturers even require RAID functionality to boost reliability. For IVI and other high-end systems like ADAS and instrument clusters, Huirong offers tailored solutions. These include firmware updates based on manufacturer needs, allowing the host to monitor storage health via telematics, preventing data loss under extreme temperatures. The firmware can self-scan at certain temperatures to reduce risks. With the rise of 3D TLC NAND, control chips must support stronger firmware debugging to minimize DPPM. Additionally, Huirong integrates features like digital signatures, encryption, and secure erase to meet growing security demands. Currently, Huirong’s automotive solutions support PATA, SATA, eMMC, and SD card interfaces, but also incorporate emerging trends like PCIe and UFS. Soon, the company will introduce new solutions supporting the next-generation 3D NAND technologies. The Ferri series, a key product in automotive applications, includes features like NANDXtend, IntelligentScan, and end-to-end DPP to prevent errors caused by high temperature or frequent read operations. It also uses LDPC and group page RAID to extend the life of NAND flash after optimization. This overview highlights the importance of memory upgrade and debugging in automotive electronics, especially for ADAS and connected vehicles.
