Renesas Electronics Co., Ltd. (TSE:6723), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions, has recently announced the successful development of an "Emotional Engine" for its R-Car platform. This groundbreaking technology integrates artificial emotional intelligence developed by Cocoro SB, a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group. The new development kit enables vehicles to detect and interpret the driver's emotional state, allowing the car to tailor its responses and enhance the overall driving experience.
The Emotional Engine uses advanced speech emotion recognition to analyze the driver's tone and language, identifying emotions such as confidence, doubt, or stress. A newly integrated user interface (UI) on the Renesas R-Car SoC (system-on-a-chip) visually represents the car’s emotional response, making interactions more intuitive and personalized. By understanding both verbal cues and emotional states, the system can adapt in real-time, improving safety and comfort during the drive.
Additionally, the technology incorporates AI-driven machine learning, enabling the vehicle to continuously improve its responses based on interactions with the driver. This means the car can become more attuned to individual preferences over time, offering a more seamless and responsive experience.
Renesas plans to launch the development kit in the second half of this year, marking a significant step toward emotionally intelligent automotive systems. At the SoftBank World 2017 conference, which will take place from July 20th to 21st at the Royal Prince Hotel in Tokyo, Renesas will showcase its Internet Car Simulator, featuring the new "Emotional Engine" development kit.
The company believes that emotions, facial expressions, eye movements, and even vital signs play a crucial role in shaping the future of driver-car interaction and autonomous vehicles. For instance, if the car detects that a driver is feeling anxious, it could suggest staying in manual mode or adjust driving behavior accordingly. In nighttime driving scenarios, the system could even modify speed based on the driver’s emotional state.
By offering development kits that integrate emotional intelligence, Renesas aims to help automakers and IT companies build next-generation interfaces that make driving more human-centered. This approach opens up new possibilities for applications that leverage emotional data to enhance user experience and safety.
The Emotional Engine is composed of two key components. The first is speech emotion recognition, which analyzes audio signals to detect emotional states. The second is emotion generation technology, which uses data from multiple sensors to simulate internal "hormone balances" and generate appropriate emotional responses. These emotions are visualized through an "emotion map," represented in color and volume—such as yellow for happiness, red for sadness, and volume levels from 1 to 10.
With the launch of its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and self-driving platform Renesas Autonomy?, the company continues to push the boundaries of smart mobility, delivering safer, more reliable, and more convenient driving experiences for the future.
