In recent days, He Yang, an industry analyst in the home appliance sector, emphasized that as consumer demand evolves, the home appliance industry should leverage the trends of branding, health, and smart technology to optimize its industrial structure and expand product offerings. Despite following the general trend of consumption upgrades in recent years, the industry has entered a new stage of development. However, experts still highlight ongoing challenges: first, technological monopolies have made high-quality products unaffordable for many consumers. Second, the application of advanced technologies in consumer products remains slow, often confined to laboratories or industrial use rather than reaching the mass market.
Faced with the gap between people's desire for a better life and current industry development, how can home appliance companies use branding, health, and smart trends to reshape their industrial structures, expand product lines, accelerate innovation, and align with consumer expectations?
**Breaking Technological Monopolies to Make High-Quality Products More Affordable**
"The foundation of consumption upgrade lies in manufacturing enhancement," said He Yang. In the past, high-end technologies and superior quality were concentrated among a few domestic and foreign brands, leading to high prices that made it difficult for ordinary consumers to afford them. Sharp, a globally recognized brand, once exemplified this issue. While its screens, technology, and quality were world-class, the high price kept it out of reach for most consumers.
After Foxconn invested in and supported Sharp, the company leveraged Foxconn’s supply chain to improve production efficiency and reduce costs. This allowed Sharp to offer high-end products at more affordable prices while maintaining top-tier quality. By embedding core technologies across different product lines, Sharp achieved both "noble" quality and "not expensive" pricing.
Dr. Chen Guoguo, vice president of Foxconn and a Sharp TV operator, stated that by combining technological advantages with Foxconn’s industrial chain, Sharp positioned itself as “noble and not expensive,†making high-quality products accessible to Chinese consumers.
Zhang Ding, a researcher in consumer economics, believes that the key to meeting the needs of a better life is to provide products that are "noble but not expensive."
**Widening Access to Cutting-Edge Technology to Elevate Consumer Products**
Another challenge is that advanced technologies often remain stuck in labs or industrial settings, failing to reach the consumer level. Zhang Ding pointed out that some technologies capable of improving daily life are still not widely available.
He Yang noted that reducing production costs, integrating the industrial chain, and embedding core technologies into various product lines are essential steps for the home appliance industry to meet consumer demands and address imbalances in development.
Sharp, leveraging Foxconn’s full industry chain, launched 60-inch and 70-inch TVs to meet market demand. In June, Sharp introduced the Kuang series, featuring cutting-edge technologies such as cadmium-free wide color gamut, high dynamic contrast, and dual decoding speed, significantly enhancing the audiovisual experience.
To address issues like small living spaces limiting large-screen enjoyment, Sharp continued innovating in display resolution, moving from 2K to 4K and now applying 8K technology. With 8K, the optimal viewing distance shrinks to about 60–70 cm, allowing users to interact with the TV easily.
In 2016, Foxconn and Sharp established an 8K display ecosystem lab in Shenzhen, launching the world’s first 8K TV this year. According to a Sharp representative, the deployment of 8K and 5G technology aims to drive industry-wide upgrades and promote balanced development at the high-end level.
With 8K ultra-fine image quality and 5G support, Sharp’s ecosystem applications will transform communication, shopping, security, transportation, education, and more. The integration of TVs with surveillance systems creates safer homes, while connecting to vehicles enables remote control and data synchronization. Educational and professional scenarios, such as child learning or conferences, can also be realized on large screens, transforming everyday life through technology.
