In response to previous rumors that BlackBerry was planning to lay off up to 1,000 employees, the company has clarified its stance. It is expected that the global workforce will be reduced by approximately 35%, but the official statement from BlackBerry confirmed that the layoffs are not as widespread as reported. The plan specifically targets only the Waterloo, Ontario, Canada headquarters and the Sunrise, Florida, USA branch, with a total of around 200 employees affected.
BlackBerry emphasized that the restructuring is not about abolishing 35% of its workforce globally, but rather a strategic adjustment focused on specific locations. Among those affected is Gary Klassen, known as the "father of BBM," signaling potential shifts in the company’s future direction. While the exact impact of these changes remains unclear, it appears that BlackBerry is reevaluating its business model and focusing on more sustainable growth strategies.
Earlier, former BlackBerry executive Cheng Shouzong mentioned that the company's future would be closely tied to the Android platform, leveraging BlackBerry's renowned security features to regain market relevance. However, it remains uncertain whether this shift will lead to a new operating system or if BlackBerry will continue supporting BlackBerry 10 in some capacity.
In addition to software development, Cheng also highlighted that the company will explore parallel development of the Android platform. If this approach does not yield significant revenue, BlackBerry may consider venturing into hardware development again, focusing on software solutions such as automotive platforms powered by the BlackBerry OS. This indicates that while the company is evolving, its core strengths in security and innovation remain central to its long-term vision.
