Bosch Sensortec is addressing the three major challenges facing consumer MEMS in 2017. At a recent press event, Leopold Beer, President of Bosch Sensortec Asia Pacific, outlined these key issues. The first challenge is the slowing growth of the smartphone MEMS market, which remains highly competitive. While smartphones still dominate the MEMS industry, the market has reached a plateau, yet it continues to attract both new and established players, intensifying competition.
The second challenge lies in the slow adoption of new applications, such as wearables, where demand is still emerging and fragmented. These applications require tailored solutions, but the market lacks clear direction, making it difficult for MEMS vendors to justify large R&D investments. Finally, customer acceptance of innovative MEMS applications remains low due to market uncertainty and technical risks.
To tackle these issues, Bosch Sensortec is evolving its business model by offering comprehensive solutions rather than just components. It now integrates DSP, microcontrollers, and proprietary software algorithms to deliver ready-to-use systems. For example, instead of selling standalone sensors, they provide all-in-one environmental units like the BME680, which combines pressure, temperature, humidity, and VOC sensing into a compact 3mm x 3mm package.
Additionally, Bosch is focusing on application-specific solutions, helping customers find creative use cases for their products. They are also pushing innovation through new technologies, such as the BML050 MEMS scanner, which enables laser projection and gesture-based interfaces, expanding into optical microsystems.
Currently, Bosch offers a wide range of MEMS products, including inertial sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, IMUs), environmental sensors, smart sensors, optical sensors, and acoustic sensors. Jeanne Forget, Vice President of Marketing at Bosch Sensortec, emphasized that the company will continue to focus on reducing size and power consumption, enhancing integration, and developing new sensor clusters to maintain its leadership in the industry.
In 2015, Bosch’s global revenue reached 70.6 billion euros, with 59% from mobile device solutions and 41% from industrial and consumer markets. Geographically, Europe accounted for 53%, Asia for 27%, and the Americas for 20%.
