Microchip Technology Inc. (NYSE) has announced the launch of its new automotive-grade 4-port USB84604 IC to expand its USB2 controller hub product line. The new USB84604 UCH2 features FlexConnect technology and an upstream port that supports USB 2.0 and USB High Speed Inter-Chip ( HSIC ) connections, making it ideal for automotive infotainment systems that require a large number of USB ports and connections. The uplink port can be selected from USB2.0 and HSIC , supports multiple serial protocols through I/O bridge and has advanced battery charging function, which can achieve low power consumption and increase flexibility.

Microchip 's FlexConnect technology makes it easy to implement port reversal or "role swapping" to cater to consumer demand for "connected cars." The downstream port 1 of the USB84604 can be interchanged with the upstream host port to transfer host functions to products connected to UCH2, such as smartphones and tablets. This unique feature allows the smartphone ecosystem of software and applications to be integrated into automotive infotainment systems.

The IC's HSIC connection incorporates Microchip 's Inter-Chip ConnectivityTM technology, enabling the USB84604 UCH2 connected to the board to use the popular USB 2.0 protocol to significantly reduce power consumption. This advantage is especially noticeable in data transmission; it is measured to consume only one-seventh of a pair of traditional USB 2.0 physical layer transceivers.

The 4-port USB84604 UCH2 can be used as a full-speed hub or a full/high speed hub to connect to the upstream port. When connected to a high-speed host, the four downstream ports can operate at low speed (1.5 Mbps), full speed (12 Mbps), or high speed (480 Mbps). In addition, the USB84604's integrated battery charger detection circuit supports battery detection and charging of the downstream port, and can replace the external battery charger with advanced battery charging modes such as USB-IF battery charging (BC1.2) and Apple?.

The UCH2 also integrates Microchip's VariSenseTM and PHYBoost technologies to ensure superior signal strength and robust operation in poor electromagnetic interference (EMI) environments in typical automotive applications.

The USB84604 can load its functions and configuration from an external flash. On-chip One Time Programming (OTP) memory can be used to load the permanent configuration, while the System Management Bus (SMBus) slave interface can be used to customize the functionality of the USB84604. This interface controls the digital and USB lines for internal testing, configures the hub to select the ideal function for enumeration, and can load custom firmware to fully implement the new UCH2 features.

The USB84604 UCH2 also enables seamless communication between applications through a variety of protocols and methods such as I2CTM, SPI, UART, and general purpose I/O. This allows the system designer to use this controller hub as a virtual fifth port. For example, if an authentication chip needs to be upgraded in an infotainment system design, its functionality can be easily changed from a human machine interface (HMI) to an adapter without re-authentication.

Dan Termer, vice president of automotive infotainment systems at Microchip, said: "Automotive manufacturers are responding quickly to consumer demand for seamless communication between personal devices within the car, so USB connectivity is also growing rapidly. Highly integrated As a new generation of UCH products, the USB84604 has enabled its designers to quickly develop innovative advanced solutions with its rich features."

Supply

The 4-port USB84604 UCH2 is available in a 64-pin QFN package and is sampling now and in volume production from 10,000-piece quantities.
