What are you most afraid of when playing games? Is it the fear of pressing the wrong key on the keyboard? Especially during intense gameplay, accidentally hitting Shift+Ctrl might bring up the Pinyin input method. Or maybe it's the Win key that causes the Start menu to pop up unexpectedly, leading to a crash or distraction.
Some players try to reduce these issues by changing shortcut keys or even removing the Win key cap from their keyboards. However, there's a more effective and flexible solution: modifying the Windows registry. This method allows you to disable specific keys completely, and you can even create a .reg file for easy import and use.
To get started, open the Registry Editor by typing `regedit` in the Run dialog (Win+R). Navigate to the following path:
**HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout**
Make sure not to confuse this with **Keyboard Layouts**, which is a different folder. Once you're in the correct location, right-click on the right pane and select **New > Binary Value**. Name it **Scancode Map**.
Now comes the important part. To block specific keys, you need to enter the correct scancode values. The format requires at least three lines of 16 characters each. Here’s how it works:
- The first line must be all zeros (0000 0000 0000 0000).
- The second line specifies the number of keys you want to block. For one key, use **0200 0000**, for two keys, use **0300 0000**, and so on.
- The next eight characters represent the scancode of the key you want to block.
- If you're blocking multiple keys, continue adding scancodes in the same format.
- Finally, end with a line of eight zeros to ensure the changes take effect.
For example, to disable the left Win key, your entry would look like this:

0200 0000 0000 5BE0
0000 0000 0000 0000
```
If you want to block both the left and right Win keys, adjust the second line to **0300 0000** and add the second scancode:
```
0000 0000 0000 0000
0300 0000 0000 5BE0

```
You can find a complete list of scancodes for all 104 keys online or in Excel spreadsheets. Once you've entered the correct values, save the changes and restart your computer or log out and back in.
To unblock a key, simply delete the **Scancode Map** entry. For convenience, you can export the registry key and save it for future use. This trick is especially useful for gamers who want to prevent accidental key presses during critical moments.
